The Community Computer Refurbishing Program was founded in 2016 by Paul and Nancy Bégin with a simple but impactful mission: reduce the number of computers ending up in the landfill while providing free refurbished computers to individuals in the Ottawa-Orléans (Ontario) community.
Over the years, the program expanded to include Charlie Cox and his son, Brodie, who now lead the refurbishing efforts. Together, this dedicated team has provided over 1,500 computers to families, students, entrepreneurs, seniors, new Canadians, and others in need. What began with just 25 computers in the first year has since grown into a far-reaching initiative!
Donated computers are refurbished to ensure they are valuable tools for recipients, focusing on functionality and reliability. Depending on the device's age and configuration:
Operating System: Windows 11 is installed if the device supports it. If not, Windows 10 is used. Devices that can't support Windows 10 are equipped with Elementary OS (Linux).
Chromebooks: Factory reset.
Upgrades: Refurbished computers receive (as needed) new batteries, power cords, webcams, speakers, and Wi-Fi adapters. When possible, replacement parts may be salvaged from non-working devices.
The program is fuelled by generous donations of older laptops and PCs from the Ottawa-Orléans community. It is self-funded, with proceeds from the sale of certain items helping cover the costs of necessary parts. True to the "buy nothing" philosophy, refurbished computers and laptops are given back to the community at no cost.
Financial support also comes from individual donations, and all funds raised go directly toward refurbishing costs—100% of every dollar is reinvested into the program. Operating entirely on a volunteer basis, the initiative continues to thrive thanks to the community's support and involvement.
Thank you for your interest and support - neighbours being neighbourly, it all starts with you!
Refurbished computers may be 8-10 years old and are suitable for most household tasks. We work with various "Buy Nothing" Facebook groups in the Orléans community. To be considered for a computer, simply comment on one of our posts in your community gifting group. Please refrain from sending private messages requesting a computer.
We review every request, so it’s helpful if your comment includes details on how you plan to use the computer or why you need one. Simply commenting “I’m very interested” will rarely result in receiving a device. Mentioning how many times you have requested a computer is not a primary factor in our decision-making process. If you have previously received a computer through the CCRP, it is unlikely you will receive a second one. Thank you for understanding.
You can help support this Program by donating laptops (Windows 7 or newer original operating system) or Chromebooks. All donated computers have the hard disks wiped clean so that data is unrecoverable.
While we continue to look for new ways to fund the program, a Go Fund Me campaign Support free computers for the Orléans community is available online. These contributions play a vital role in helping us refurbish donated computers and provide them to members in our community who can benefit from them, free of charge.
